Raiders rise as Hawks tumble

Los Fresnos, TX

South falls from 5 to 10 after loss

Despite a closer game than most had anticipated, the Los Fresnos Falcons remained atop this week's Valley Morning Star Top Ten poll.

The Falcons once again swept the vote, garnering each of the possible five first-place nods for a total of 50 points.

Coach Scott Ford's squad is ranked 10th in Class 5A by the Associated Press this week and are currently 7-0 after a 32-22 win over Brownsville Pace.

Los Fresnos has a date with Porter at Sams Memorial Stadium Friday, and after taking on Rivera next week, a huge showdown is set with Weslaco, which could be for the district title.

Right behind Los Fresnos is Edcouch-Elsa, which maintained its No. 2 ranking with 45 points.

La Maquina Amarilla is on a roll once again and is coming off a big win at rival Mercedes last week. E-E is currently 7-0.

A date with the Mission Eagles remains for E-E, and that game will also more than likely decide the 32-4A crown.

Maintaining its showing are the Rio Hondo Bobcats (8-0).

Coach Gus Cavazos' club got a big win at Hidalgo last week, 26-6.

With the win, the Cats have a good shot at repeating as 32-3A champions, though Port Isabel and La Feria stand in the way. The Bobcats are off this week and have two weeks to prepare for their contest with the Tarpons before closing out the year against the Lions.

Joe Salinas' La Villa Cardinals are fourth in the poll once again. The Cards moved up a slot in the AP rankings, jumping to ninth in the state in Class 1A after blasting fellow Valley 1A school Santa Maria 66-19.

La Villa (7-0) will travel to the Brush Country this week to take on the previously undefeated Bruni Badgers, who lost to Ben Bolt last week.

A tie at the No. 5 spot has PSJA North (7-0) and McHi (7-1) gridlocked. The Raiders took it to Harlingen South Saturday at PSJA Stadium with a 22-13 win over the Hawks.

Many feel that the silver and black have gone under the radar with their unbeaten record, however the Raiders have proven they are no flash in the pan. The Harlingen Cardinals come calling next week in what will be a key contest in 31-5A.

Meanwhile, Tony Harris' Bulldogs have continued their return to prominence in 2006. Other than a loss to Monterrey Tech, the 'Dogs have been impressive in their seven victories and have a stranglehold of the 30-5A lead. The Bulldogs and Raiders ended with 28 points.

Weslaco remained at No. 7 with its big win over Lopez, 57-28. Coach Tony Villarreal's team totaled 24 points in the poll and has reeled off six consecutive wins and will go for number seven against San Benito tonight.

Mishak Rivas has blazed his way to the top of the 32-5A rushing lead and the Panthers have ground it out with a reckless abandon.

San Benito got back on the winning track last week with a 51-10 shellacking of Porter for the first-ever win at Bobby Morrow Stadium. Coach Mario Peņa's squad comes in eighth with 12 points.

Tonight's monster contest with Weslaco is a must-win for the 'Hounds to remain in the title hunt in the lower Valley.

Don't look now, but here comes Monty Stumbaugh's Port Isabel Tarpons.

The Tarpons come in ninth this week with nine points, a spot up from last week.

PI went to Progreso and took care of business with a 30-8 win and will now return home to host Hidalgo in an important 32-3A tilt.

The aforementioned Hawks fell to 10th with the loss to North but remain in the poll nonetheless.

Jim Helms' team suffered its first conference loss to the Raiders and will look to get back on track against PSJA Memorial on Saturday.

McAllen Memorial failed to crack the poll, but received votes to total four points, one behind South.
