Quarterback Brandon Kretz was sensational going 18-of-24 for 247 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. The senior had touchdown throws of nine, 11, and 80 yards all in the first half. That’s the good news. The bad news is the signal caller left in the second half with an MCL injury.
“I don’t know how severe it
is,” Los Fresnos head coach Scott Ford said.
Kretz will have an x-ray on the ligament at 8 a.m. today in
McAllen. Tailback Luis Campos did play, but only saw limited
action. The junior back had two carries for three yards. Campos
also had one catch for 14 yards.
The victory now puts Los Fresnos (6-1 overall) back in first place
thanks in large to a Pace win over San Benito. Now, the Falcons
are in a four-way tie for first place with San Benito, Pace and
Harlingen High for the district lead. All four squads have 3-1
district marks. Harlingen South can make a five-way tie if they
defeat Rivera tonight at Sams Memorial Stadium.
Ford is pleased with the way his team bounced back after a tough
setback to the Cardinals, and now feels there’s momentum going
into San Benito next week.
“We’re going into a battle zone next week,” Ford said. “We just
need to take it one game at a time.”
Along with Kretz, Los Fresnos had solid nights from Venus
Martinez, who rushed for 54 yards and one touchdown. Also leading
the way was wide receiver Chris Garza, who had nine catches, 116
yards and one touchdown. The Falcons leading receiver now has 29
receptions for 409 yards with three touchdowns on the season.
Garza was happy to not only to come out victorious but be back as
district leaders.
“It was really a big win for us to get back on the horse after
falling off,” Garza said.
In the first quarter, Los Fresnos struck for 14 points on two
touchdown passes from Kretz to Martinez and Jeremy Springer. The
Falcons went on to see paydirt three more times for a comfortable
35-0 halftime lead.
The Cowboys (0-4, 2-5) lone touchdown score came late in the
fourth when Oscar Salinas recovered a fumbled and rumbled for an
87-yard touchdown that erased the shut out.
