Yellowjackets look solid against Falcons in preseason scrimmage

LOS FRESNOS - Big plays are expected in Los Fresnos with the Falcons' explosive one-back, shotgun offense, but visiting Edcouch-Elsa unleashed its version of the big-play theory during a scrimmage on Friday night at Leo Aguilar Stadium.

Yellowjackets quarterback George Rubio hooked up twice with long, lean and quick wide-receiver Barron Rowell as Edcouch-Elsa turned back the Falcons 24-14 in the live action section of the last scrimmage for both teams.

"I said we had some good kids standing on the sidelines last season," said E-E coach Joe Solis.

Rubio and Rowell hooked up on an 85-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the Yellowjackets' second series that gave the 'Jackets a 14-7 lead they didn't relinquish. Rowell caught the ball at about the 50 and outran the Falcons' secondary.

After both teams were stopped for a couple of series, the "Double R" connection hooked up again for the 'Jackets on a 32-yard touchdown pass to give E-E a 21-7 edge.

Rubio also had some nice runs, including a 19-yard scramble for the first touchdown of the live action section.

"I was pleased with our offense," said Solis. "This was a good outing for us, they (Los Fresnos) are a good team. They've got a lot of talent, a lot of good athletes."

Los Fresnos had some big plays as well, including a 65-yard scoring jaunt that featured a couple of nice cuts and jukes for the Falcons' first touchdown, which made it 7-7 in the first quarter.

Falcons' quarterback Brandon Kretz also had a 32-yard scoring run to round out the Falcons' scoring.

But take away the big plays and the Falcons' offense didn't move the ball that well against an E-E defense that returned eight starters from last season.

Both teams will open its regular season campaign with games in Week 0.

Los Fresnos will play host to longtime rival Port Isabel in the Battle of Highway 100 at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 26 and Edcouch-Elsa will begin its quest for a third straight District 32-4A crown with a home game against Hidalgo on Aug. 26 at 7:30 p.m.
